Sacred Valley

History

The Sacred Valley of the Incas is one of the most popular places in Cusco. This valley contains a mixture of colonial towns built nearby Inca ruins. The Incas considered this valley as sacred because it was important for agriculture. Most of the products which feed the Inca population of Cusco were grown in this valley. Due to its importance, the Incas built most of their main cities in the Sacred Valley.

The Sacred Valley also had a religious importance. According to Inca beliefs, the Vilcanota River was the representation of the Milky Way. So, the Incas built many main temples in this valley. Some examples are the citadels of Pisac and Ollantaytambo.

Geography

The Sacred Valley of the Incas is around 15 km northeast of the city of Cusco, in the province of Urubamba. The climate is warmer than the rest of the region. Therefore, this valley contains many agricultural fields.
