Itinerary
Day 01: Moray & Maras Salt Terraces Hike
Hiking through Moray, Maras Salt Pans, and transfer to Aguas Calientes.
1
We will pick you up from your hotel at 8:00 AM and transfer you towards the Sacred Valley. Our journey begins across the fertile plains of Chinchero, rich with grains, potatoes, and beans. We start our hike in the small town of Maras, known for its beautiful colonial doorways along its main street. We then reach the circular Inca ruins of Moray, where we will enjoy a picnic lunch. The nearby Moray site, often called the “Inca agricultural laboratory,” features impressive circular terraces believed to have been used for developing different crop strains. The temperature difference between the highest and lowest terraces can be up to 15 degrees Celsius, creating distinct microclimates that allowed the cultivation of a wide variety of plants with unique growth requirements. You will have plenty of time to fully explore these fascinating ruins.
After visiting this atmospheric place, mule trails will lead us to the ancient town of Maras, distinguished by its outstanding Spanish door arches and a vast church. Maras is also famous for its strategic location above the Sacred Valley. We then descend into the Sacred Valley of the Incas to the salt pans of Salineras. Here, more than 5,000 terraces are still in production, and many families from Maras transport their salt to the market of Urubamba on mules. Finally, we transfer to Ollantaytambo to catch the train to Aguas Calientes.

Day 02: Full Day Visit to Machu Picchu / Return to Cusco
Exploring the citadel of Machu Picchu and returning to Cusco
1
Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before an early transfer to the bus stop for a short 25-minute ride up to the citadel of Machu Picchu. Upon arrival, you will participate in a comprehensive guided tour of the Citadel. You’ll visit the Main Plaza, the Circular Tower, the Sacred Sun Dial (the most important preserved Intihuatana), the Royal Quarters, the Temple of the Three Windows, various houses, warehouses, and the large central square. All these structures are interconnected by narrow roads and steps, surrounded by terraces carved into the mountainside. After the guided tour, you will have free time to explore the Archaeological Site at your leisure. You’ll have the opportunity to hike (approximately 1 hour) up to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) or climb to the summit of Wayna Picchu (permit required, usually booked well in advance), offering a magnificent panoramic view of the entire Sanctuary. In the afternoon, we will return by train to Cusco and provide a transfer back to your hotel.

Frequently Asked Questions
01 What is the best time of year to take the Maras-Moray and Machu Picchu hike?
The dry season, from May to October, is generally considered the best time to visit due to less rain and clearer skies. However, this is also peak tourist season, so expect more crowds and book well in advance. The shoulder months of April and November can also offer pleasant weather with fewer visitors.
02 Are there any age restrictions or specific physical requirements for this tour?
This tour involves moderate hiking at altitude, so participants should have a reasonable level of fitness. While there are no strict age limits, it may not be suitable for very young children or individuals with significant mobility issues. We recommend consulting with your doctor if you have any health concerns.
03 What kind of accommodation is provided in Aguas Calientes?
Accommodation in Aguas Calientes typically includes a comfortable hotel with private bathrooms. The specific hotel will depend on your booking and preferred category, ranging from standard tourist class to more upscale options. Details will be confirmed upon booking.
04 Can I bring my luggage on the train to Aguas Calientes?
Train regulations generally limit luggage to a small backpack or carry-on bag (approximately 5 kg/11 lbs per person). Any additional luggage can be stored at your hotel in Cusco, and you’ll reunite with it upon your return. Pack only essentials for your overnight stay in Aguas Calientes.
05 What precautions should I take for altitude sickness?
To minimize the risk of altitude sickness, we strongly recommend arriving in Cusco at least one to two days before your trek to acclimate. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and heavy meals, and get enough rest. Coca tea is also a traditional remedy that can help. Inform your guide immediately if you experience any symptoms.
