Journey from Cusco to Pilcopata via the Cloud Forest

We will begin our journey early in the morning, driving from your hotel in Cusco to the town of Paucartambo. Along the way, we’ll stop to admire the Chullpas of Ninamarca, ancient pre-Inca burial towers. Afterward, we will descend from approximately 10,000 feet (3,000 meters) above sea level into the unique ecosystem of the San Pedro Cloud Forest, situated in the high Andean terrain. This forest is a sanctuary for various distinctive plant species, including vibrant orchids, heliconias, and ferns. We’ll also have the chance to spot native birds of Manu, such as the famous Andean Cock-of-the-Rock and the Horned Screamer. Our first day concludes at our lodge in Pilcopata, where we’ll enjoy dinner and rest.
Birdwatching and navigation into the Manu National Park

After breakfast, we’ll head to a nearby birdwatching spot. During our trek, we’ll visit local plantations of coca, coffee, and bananas. Following a short trip, we’ll arrive at the Atalaya dock, which serves as the entry point to the Manu National Park. From here, we’ll navigate by boat for about 40 minutes to reach our jungle lodge. After settling in, we’ll embark on an exploration of the surrounding jungle. On this second day, you’ll also have the option to participate in exciting activities like zip-lining.
Spectacular birdwatching at the Macaw Clay Lick and lake exploration

On our third day, we’ll depart from our lodge early in the morning to visit a nearby Macaw Clay Lick, also known as a ‘Collpa.’ This location is perfect for birdwatching, as a large number of macaws and parrots gather here. It’s believed that these birds visit the clay lick to consume essential minerals. Afterward, we’ll proceed to Cocha Machuwasi, a small lake situated on the right bank of the Alto Madre de Dios River. This serene lake offers an excellent opportunity to appreciate the diverse flora and fauna of the Manu National Park, with numerous birds, monkeys, and small reptiles often seen along its shores and surrounding areas. For those interested, an optional short night walk with our staff is available.
Scenic return journey to Cusco

On our final day, we will return to Cusco. After breakfast, we’ll check out from our accommodation and head back to the Atalaya dock. Our journey will take us back through the captivating cloud forest we encountered on the first day, eventually arriving in Cusco.
A valid passport is required for this tour. Be prepared for changing weather conditions in the jungle environment. Respect wildlife and the natural environment of the National Park by maintaining a safe distance and not disturbing animals or plants.
Due to limited space on land and river transportation, we recommend bringing a small to medium-sized backpack with only essential items for the 4-day trip. Your main luggage can often be stored safely at your hotel in Cusco or with the tour operator in Cusco, as mentioned in the inclusions.
