Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the best time of year to trek to Choquequirao?

The dry season, from May to October, is generally considered the best time for the Choquequirao trek. During these months, you can expect clearer skies and less rainfall, making for more comfortable hiking conditions and better visibility of the archaeological site and landscapes.

02 Do I need to carry my own backpack during the trek?

While the tour includes horses to carry camping equipment, food, and cooking gear, you will need to carry a small daypack with your personal essentials, such as water, snacks, a camera, extra layers of clothing, and any personal medications. The main luggage will be transported by the horses.

03 Are there toilets or shower facilities available along the Choquequirao trail?

Given the remote nature of the trek, dedicated facilities are very basic. Toilets at campsites are typically pit latrines. Shower facilities are generally not available; however, you might have opportunities for a quick wash using buckets of water at some campsites. Be prepared for a rustic experience.

04 Is this trek suitable for children?

The Choquequirao trek is considered challenging due to its steep ascents, descents, and remote conditions. It is generally not recommended for young children or individuals without significant trekking experience. We advise a minimum age of 15 years, provided they are in excellent physical condition and accustomed to multi-day hiking.

05 What kind of clothing should I pack for the Choquequirao trek?

You should pack layers of clothing suitable for varying temperatures, as weather can change quickly. Include moisture-wicking base layers, warm mid-layers (fleece), a waterproof and windproof outer jacket, comfortable trekking pants, a hat for sun protection, and a warm hat for evenings. Don’t forget sturdy, broken-in hiking boots and several pairs of trekking socks.
