This electrifying adventure kicks off around 4:00 a.m., when we pick you up directly from your hotel. We will take you on a one-and-a-half-hour drive to Cusipata so you can enjoy an energy-packed breakfast. Then, we continue by road heading to Marangani.
Right there, you will begin a challenging uphill hike for approximately one hour. You will advance along a trail surrounded by wild grasslands and overwhelming reddish lands, accompanied by native wildlife: alpacas, llamas, and even vicuñas. Upon reaching the summit of Pallay Punchu – whose name in Quechua means “woven poncho” – you will be able to climb its ridges and feel as if you are flying over the surface of an extraterrestrial planet.
This mountain is famous for its perfect lines, meticulously sculpted by nature over millions of years. You will distinguish an explosion of colors: fiery red, deep brown, vibrant yellow, intense green, wild magenta, burning ochre, among many others. As you become intoxicated by this palette of shades, you can also peer over the edge to contemplate in all its glory the stunning Langui Lagoon and its hypnotic blue waters, which stretch for more than 15 kilometers.
You will reach an extreme altitude of 4,700 m (15,419 ft), so we demand that you be well acclimatized to prevent altitude sickness from ruining your experience. Frequently Asked Questions
01 How difficult is the Pallay Punchu hike?
The Pallay Punchu hike is generally considered moderate. The trail includes uphill sections, uneven terrain, and high-altitude conditions that can make the trek more challenging than the distance alone suggests. While no technical climbing is required, participants should be in good physical condition and comfortable walking for several hours in a mountain environment.
02 Do I need previous hiking experience?
Previous hiking experience is not required to join the tour. However, travelers should be physically prepared for a high-altitude hike and capable of walking on natural mountain trails. People who regularly participate in outdoor activities or enjoy walking will usually find the trek more comfortable.
03 Is acclimatization necessary before visiting Pallay Punchu?
Yes. Since the tour takes place at elevations above 4,700 m (15,400 ft), spending at least 1–2 days in Cusco before the excursion is strongly recommended. Proper acclimatization helps your body adapt to the altitude and can reduce the likelihood of experiencing altitude-related discomfort during the hike.
04 What should I bring for the tour?
It is recommended to bring comfortable hiking shoes, warm layers, a waterproof jacket, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, a reusable water bottle, snacks, and personal medications. Temperatures can vary throughout the day, and weather conditions in the Andes may change quickly, so dressing in layers is the best option.
05 What makes Pallay Punchu different from other colorful mountains in Cusco?
Pallay Punchu stands out because of its distinctive sharp ridges and naturally colored mineral layers that resemble a traditional Andean poncho. Unlike some of the region’s more visited mountain destinations, Pallay Punchu offers a quieter experience with fewer crowds, allowing visitors to enjoy impressive landscapes, panoramic views, and a more authentic connection with the Andean highlands.
