Your full-day journey begins from Cusco, traveling approximately three hours southeast along the road towards Puno. A short detour will lead you to the impressive Raqchi archaeological complex, situated on the right bank of the Vilcanota River, close to the Community of Raqchi in the San Pedro district, Canchis Province. The site stands at an altitude of 3,480 meters above sea level (11,417 feet). Much of the surrounding area is characterized by rocks formed from ancient lava flows, a legacy of the Kinsachata volcano, with other parts historically used for agriculture. You’ll explore the complex, which covers about a thousand acres and includes aqueducts, underground tombs, and pre-Inca enclosures, all protected by a massive Inca wall. The construction of Raqchi spanned different periods, with initial work during the reign of Viracocha Inca, expanded under Pachacutec, and completed by Tupac Yupanqui. Discover its profound religious significance as a sanctuary dedicated to Viracocha, the supreme creator god. You’ll also learn about its strategic administrative role between the Quechua and Aymara regions, its function as a vital storage and production hub with large textile and ceramic workshops, and its military importance as a training ground and communication center for Inca chasquis. Before returning to Cusco, you’ll have the opportunity to observe the daily life of the local community, known for their pottery and farming, and learn about their annual Folk Festival held every third Sunday in June.
