Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the best time of year to undertake the Ausangate Special Short Trek?

The best time to do the Ausangate trek is during the dry season, from April to October. During these months, you can expect clearer skies, less rain, and more stable weather conditions, making for more enjoyable trekking and better views. The shoulder months of April, May, September, and October often offer a good balance of weather and fewer crowds.

02 What kind of physical preparation is recommended for this high-altitude trek?

This 4-day trek is considered difficult due to the high altitudes reached (up to 4800m). It is highly recommended that participants engage in regular cardiovascular exercise (running, cycling, swimming) for at least 2-3 months prior to the trek. Hiking with a backpack and gaining elevation will also be beneficial to prepare your body for the sustained effort.

03 Is it possible to rent trekking gear, such as sleeping bags or trekking poles?

Yes, if you do not have your own, it is typically possible to rent essential trekking gear like sleeping bags (we recommend one rated for -15°C/5°F or colder) and trekking poles from the tour operator or local rental shops in Cusco. Please confirm availability and pricing when booking your tour.

04 How does the tour operator address altitude sickness concerns?

Your safety is a top priority. Our guides are trained in wilderness first aid and carry a first aid kit and an oxygen bottle for emergencies. We strongly recommend acclimatizing in Cusco for at least 1-2 days before the trek. Staying hydrated, eating light meals, and consulting your doctor about altitude medication (like Diamox) before your trip are also highly advised.

05 What is the luggage policy during the trek, and how much can I bring?

During the trek, your main luggage will be carried by horses or llamas. You will typically be allowed a personal duffel bag weighing approximately 7-8 kg (15-17 lbs), which includes your sleeping bag and personal clothing. You will carry a small daypack with essentials like water, snacks, camera, and rain gear. Specific weight limits will be confirmed by the operator.
