Manu Amazon Adventure – 3 Days

Embark on a day of extraordinary adventure as we unveil the splendors of the Andean landscape, transitioning from towering heights to the rich Amazon Basin. At 5:30 AM, we’ll pick you up from your hotel in Cusco. As we journey from the Andes to the Amazon, we’ll make two intriguing stops.

Our first stop is the small village of Ninamarca, home to fascinating pre-Incan funeral tombs from the Lupaca civilization. Our guide will provide a detailed tour, explaining their historical significance. We then continue to the colonial town of Paucartambo, situated at 9,186 feet (2,800 meters) above sea level. This town is renowned for its beautiful colonial churches and is a repository of ancient traditions, where locals converse in Quechua.

Next, we’ll drive up to Acjanaco Pass, positioned at 11,646 feet (3,550 meters) above sea level. This highland forest gatekeeper marks our entrance to Manu National Park. From there, we journey further uphill to the breathtaking Tres Cruces viewpoint, at an altitude of 12,139 feet (3,700 meters), offering a panoramic view of the vast Amazon Basin.

We then begin our descent into the heart of Manu National Park, passing through elfin and cloud forests. We pause for a refreshing lunch amidst the vibrant greens. Afterward, we’ll walk into the woods, eyes peeled for the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, Peru’s national bird, along with a wide array of other bird species. As the day concludes, we descend to Pilcopata (2,296 feet / 700 meters), where a comfortable jungle lodge awaits for our overnight stay.

Immerse yourself in the thrill of the Amazon on the second day of our expedition. We plunge deeper into vibrant landscapes, promising unmatched adventure and encounters with captivating biodiversity. Your day begins early with a typical Amazonian breakfast at the Pilcopata Lodge.

Following breakfast, we’ll drive to Atalaya Port, initiating our waterborne exploration of the Amazon. Aboard a comfortable motorboat, we voyage along the Madre de Dios River, the artery of the Amazon, towards our jungle lodge. This river journey offers teeming rainforest vistas and diverse wildlife, perfect for nature lovers and photographers.

Upon arrival at the jungle lodge, our crew will assist with check-in, and a delicious Amazonian lunch will be served. Post-lunch, we set out to explore the trails around the lodge, where you’ll encounter a range of medicinal plants, including the potent San Pedro Cacti. As evening unfurls, we venture to the serene Machu Wasi Lake. Here, we explore the lake on a native wooden raft, catching sight of hoatzins, black caimans, and various reptiles. If you’re up for it, optional zip-lining is available, offering a thrilling treetop perspective of this majestic ecosystem.

As night descends, we return to the lodge for dinner. The adventure continues with a fascinating nocturnal tour post-dinner, where you’ll experience the Amazon’s captivating world after dark, spotting nocturnal creatures and insects. We’ll then return to the lodge for a well-deserved rest.

Discover the awe-inspiring wildlife of the Amazon on the final day, dedicated to a unique natural phenomenon: the Parrot Clay Lick—a spectacle that will leave you spellbound. We set off at daybreak, embarking on a brief 10-minute journey to the clay lick site within Manu National Park.

Watch in wonder as over a hundred vibrantly colored parrots and macaws descend to feast on the mineral-rich clay. This clay is laced with unique mineral salts that aid the birds in purging toxins from their bodies. This natural spectacle is a testament to the harmony of the ecosystem and a visual treat you won’t soon forget.

Following this early morning extravaganza, we’ll return to the lodge for a nourishing breakfast. Refreshed and recharged, we then sail back along the Manu River to Atalaya Port. Here, our driver will be waiting to escort us back to Cusco in our comfortable van, concluding our unforgettable exploration into the heart of the Amazon around 7:30 PM.
