Let yourself be swept away by the incredible Inca fortress of Waqrapukara
This daring one-day adventure kicks off very early, while night still embraces the city. We will pick you up from your hotel around 4:00 a.m. and begin a two-hour journey to the town of Cusipata. There, you will recharge with a breakfast that will fuel you for what lies ahead. Then we will continue along the edge of the splendid Pomacanchi Lagoon, a mirror of water surrounded by endless highland pastures and Andean crops. This lagoon is, no less, the second largest in the entire Cusco region.
Immediately after, we will resume the route on an unpaved road for another hour toward the town of Santa Lucía, while the landscape hits your retina around every curve —with the lagoon appearing in the distance. From the town, a final stretch will take us to the trek starting point, where you will have plenty of time to prepare your gear. The first section lasts approximately an hour and a half, with views of the magnificent Apurímac Canyon, one of the deepest and highest in Peru, and a wild landscape of cliffs that will leave you breathless.
When we reach the Waqrapukara viewpoint, you can take a breather and fire off the first photos of this fortress that rises defiantly on the edge of the abyss. Then we will ascend along a trail carved into the cliff edge, while the Apurímac River snakes far below.
You will have approximately an hour and a half to explore the archaeological complex at your leisure: climb among the remains of the temple, photograph the famous horn-shaped rock formation, and soak in the mind-blowing canyon views. Waqrapukara possesses enigmatic pre-Inca and Inca constructions, terraces, and a fascinating history that make it the perfect setting to learn about Andean culture. Without a doubt, this wonderful place will steal your breath from start to finish.
When the group is ready, we will begin the return along the same trail. We will reach our private transport after an hour and a half of trekking and finally return to Cusco at approximately 5:00 p.m.
