Tour Information
Tambopata Clay Lick tour

Our Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick program, also known as our three-day Tambopata Clay Lick tour, is specifically created to give you the most of the Tambopata National Reserve in a short amount of time. Tambopata National Park is a great area to see some unique plant and animal species and learn about Amazonian culture.

Pata means “high place,” while Tambo means “building.” The famous Tambopata river is the source of the name Tambopata. Lake Titicaca is its birthplace.

Over 650 different species of birds and almost 1500 different types of butterflies may be found in the vast national park, which spans 274,690 hectares. Tambopata is home to eight different species of macaws.

Itinerary

Day 1Puerto Maldonado - Tambopata Jungle Tour

We will be picking you up from Puerto Maldonado Airport or bus terminal and will be transferring you to our office. Here we will give you a short introductory briefing on what to expect on the three days Tambopata Clay Lick tour.

If you have big bags, you can leave them at our office at no additional cost. We will then transfer you to the Tambopata boat pier. It is an hour’s drive from the city centre. Here you will be boarding the motor boat to our jungle lodge.

The hotel staff will extend a warm welcome to Tambopata. After checking in to your respective roome, we will be serving a typical Amazonian meal for lunch.

After lunch, we will be hiking on one of the trails. On this tour, you will be introduced to the Tambopata Rainforest. You will also be able to spot different animals, plants and birds. You will also see river otters and other mammals on the river banks.

Later in the evening, we will return to the lodge where we will serve dinner.

Day 2Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick - Caiman Spotting - Jungle Tour

Early in the morning at 04:30 AM we will be leaving the lodge and will travel by boat for an hour and a half to see the spectacular Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick. This is the largest Macaw Clay lick in the world.

The boat ride offers sights of different Amazonian wildlife including the world’s largest rodents – Capybaras. You will also be able to spot Jaguars on the river banks.

Chuncho Macaw Clay lick is a unique sight. You will see hundreds of brightly coloured Macaws and Parrots flock to eat the clay. The clay has a mineral content that helps them to flush out the toxins from their body.

Once you have had your fill of the Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick, we will return to the lodge for breakfast. You will then have some free time to relax in the cozy ambience of our Jungle lodge.

After lunch, we will be hiking further into the rainforest. Our local expert will be explaining the use of different plants. Locals in the rainforest rely on these plants to cure their sickness. You will also get to see many insects, animals and birds.

After this, we will return to the lodge for dinner. At night, we will have a short night safari where you will be able to spot some nocturnal insects and animals.

Day 3Tambopata Rainforest - Puerto Maldonado
