History

The Salkantay Mountain is a popular destination for trekking. The term “Salkantay” is a Quechua word that, according to some experts, means “who produces avalanches”. The mountain also has a religious importance for the people of the region. It’s considered an Apu, an ancient spirit who protects people and lands.

Geography

The Salkantay Mountain is part of the Vilcabamba mountain range, in the province of La Convencion. It has an altitude of 6264 meters above sea level.
